Phishing (Email and Messaging Fraud)

Phishing (pronounced “fishing”) is an attempt to fraudulently acquire sensitive information, such as passwords and credit card details, by masquerading as a trustworthy entity. Typically, phishers use email or instant messaging to direct victims to enter detailed personal information at a phony Web site. However, phishers have used telephone contact too.

Missouri Credit Union will never ask you for personal financial information through an electronic communication.

To keep your personal financial information secure, you may want to consider the following safeguards:

  • Be suspicious of any email with urgent requests for personal financial information;
  • Use antivirus and antispyware software to protect your computer;
  • Check your online account(s) regularly;
  • Review your debit and credit card statement(s) regularly;
  • Use a secure Web site when purchasing online with your debit or credit card(s);
  • Use MCU’s foreign transaction setup feature at MCU@Home when purchasing online or traveling outside of the United States; and
  • Report “phishing” emails to MCU immediately—call (573) 874-1477 or toll free (800) 451-1477.
